Eurogram was a little pressing plant owned by Polygram. They tried to set up an independent plant, but at the middle of the process they ran out of money and they only kept the pressing machines and processing equipment. In addition to pressing Polygram records, Eurogram also pressed for Iberofon when they were busy, or pressing reissues. So although they never got orders directly from DGC, they ended up pressing some Nirvana records on subcontract. So far we have discovered a Nevermind LP (GEF 24425), Come As You Are 7" (GES 19065) and 12" (GET 21699), and Lithium 12" (GET 21815) pressed by Eurogram. Iberofon created the masters, on lacquers or copper plates, whatever Eurogram requested. They usually requested lacquers. Iberofon sometimes also made the metal plates, but Eurogram usually did that themselves, because the processes and machines were different. While Iberofon stampers had a little center hole, Eurogram stampers had a very large center hole. Most Eurogram pressings has a small circle at the begining of the label, which shows the center of their plating machines. They had to cut the plates if they requested them from Iberofon, which was a difficult process. The two plants also used different acids when plating the lacquers, Eurogram actually claimed their system gave higher quality. The masters were always made especially for Eurogram. The matrix codes were always machine stamped. Nevermind GEF 24425 LP matrix: Side A: 850 GEF 24425 = *A*1 Side B: 850 GEF 24425 = *B*2 850 identifies the machine, at Iberofon, used to cut the lacquers. It is followed by the catalog number and side A/B information, and the last number is the number of the cut. B2 may indicate that the first cut was unsuccessfull, or that two lacquers were cut and plated to speed up the process. The Lithium 12" had EUR written instead of 850. |
