Black vinyl test pressing, Rainbo Records company labels. Rainbo is also identified by the S-code in the matrix. This is a test pressing for the clear LP. The record was mastered by The Mastering Lab, as identified from TML in the matrix codes. The DGC-24607-A/B-R2 and TML-M/X parts are smooth and deep, which means they were added to the lacquers in the mastering studio. R2/R2 means that it was the second set of lacquers sent to Rainbo (R for Rainbo), like the first cut R1/R1 was the first set of lacquers sent to Rainbo. They are the "same cut", they were cut at the same time by a master Scully lathe (TML-M) and a slave Neumann (TML-X) lathe. There may be small differences because of the different lathes. Two sets of lacquers were probably done so Rainbo could process stampers and press the records faster. The test pressings were done with R1/R1- and R2/R2-processed plates, so there should also be a R1/R1 test pressing out there. They mixed them up when pressing the retail albums, R1/R2 and R2/R1: Side A: DGC-24607-A-R1 TML-X S-28236 Side B: DGC-24607-B-R2 TML-M S-28237 - X Side A: DGC-24607-A-R2 TML-M S-28236 - X Side B: DGC-24607-B-R1 TML-X S-28237 They probably did that to "even out" the small differences on the cuts caused by the different types of lathes. Either way, back to the R2/R2 test pressing. The S-codes are slightly less smooth and deep, and were added to the lacquers or mother plates by Rainbo. Retail issues come with -X after the S-code on the metal plates processed from the R2 lacquers, this may have been added to the R2 plates after the test pressings had been done, or omitted by the person who transcribed the matrix for this test pressing. Two copies have been found, one came from a Rainbo employee.
